Online-Only Therapy?!
Why?
Fun Fact:
Most clients' pets choose to hang out near their human during therapy sessions.
About Online-Only Therapy
There are some differences between online (telehealth) and traditional in-person therapy... For example, it's fairly uncommon for a client to show up to a therapist's office in their pajamas at 6:30am, and unfortunately, you'll also need to supply your own tissues, to name just a few... While some situations may not be best suited for therapy on the virtual couch, many clients find online therapy to be exactly what they're looking for. and can't imagine it any other way, particularly given the realities of today's busy world.
Some of the reasons I've heard clients seek online-only therapy are:

-
Lack of therapists/long wait lists for care in their local area
-
Trying to avoid a long commute
-
Avoiding parking hassles and costs
-
Therapy feels better from the comfort of their own home
-
Prevention of communicable disease/health preservation
-
Anonymity in public; no one sees them drive to a therapy office
-
Little to no chance of accidentally running into your therapist in a social circle

What to Expect
If you've requested a phone consult, I'll call you at the time we've agreed upon; if you've requested video, I'll send you a Zoom link (although consults are held via Zoom, actual sessions occur using SimplePractice).
During our initial consultation, I'll explain my therapeutic approach and philosophy, and will ask you a little bit about what's bringing you to seek therapy, what you've tried so far, what worked, and what didn't. I'll also what you're looking for in a therapist, and you'll have a chance to ask me some questions, too. We'll decide if we're a good fit for your needs, and if we decide to proceed, we'll discuss the process to get started, including insurance and/or reimbursement matters (if applicable) along with the necessary intake paperwork and consent forms.

Insurance verifications and completed intake packets will need to be completed and returned at least one business day prior to your preferred appointment time, otherwise the appointment will be canceled and will need to be rescheduled.

Before your first session, you'll receive a secure link via email to your session 48 hours in advance, 10 minutes before, and again right before the start of your session. If you'd like less frequent reminders, you may deselect the appointment reminder option in your Secure Client Portal within SimplePractice (you will have already set up your login information when completing the intake paperwork). Each session has a unique link. When you receive the link and it's time for session, simply click the link, and you'll be transported to the virtual waiting room (and yes, there's a virtual couch). I will join as well, and will "let you in" to the actual online therapy room.

At our first session, we'll be getting to know each other a bit, and get acclimated to the process of therapy. I'll go over confidentiality and it's exceptions with you, along with the potential risks and benefits of therapy so you're fully informed. I'll need to get a basic overview of your current life situation and functioning, as well as pertinent life history across the various domains of human experience (cultural, social, emotional, physical, vocational, trauma, etc.). Usually the overview of your history can be completed in that first session, but it can occasionally take multiple sessions. At the end of the first session, we'll have gotten a sense of what your goals for therapy are, and some ways we might help you achieve those goals.

Subsequent sessions will involve a mix of continuing to get to know you, your perspectives and goals, homework assignments, and exploring new ideas and concepts to help you navigate your journey.
